Gastric band slippage – a rare complication of adjustable gastric band surgery

Adjustable gastric band surgery is one of the efficient techniques to lose body weight for a severely obese person. As obesity leads to chronic diseases it becomes essential to lose body weight to live a healthy life. Adjustable gastric band surgery is usually done with the help of laparoscopic tube. In this surgery technique an adjustable band is placed around the stomach and then warped. This creates a small pouch in the upper portion of the stomach. And when the band is placed in the upper portion it allows passing of food slowly from the pouch created to stomach. So the person does not feel hungry for long duration of time. Some stitches are done around the band to prevent slippage of the band.

But in some rare condition gastric band slippage may occur after adjustable gastric band surgery and become life threatening situation. Gastric band slippage is a complication which can occur after adjustable gastric band surgery. In this situation the band which is placed slides down and makes the pouch bigger. There are two types of gastric band slippage: Anterior slippage and Posterior slippage.

Anterior gastric band slippage: Anterior slippage happens when front part of the stomach slips up through the band. It may occur when adequate number of stitches is not done or when the stitches are not done at the right place. Or it may occur because of vomiting or over eating.

Posterior gastric band slippage: Firstly the band was placed with perigastric technique and because of this back portion of the stomach slip up through the band but now the band is placed with pars flaccid technique and thus it prevents the posterior gastric band slippage.
