Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of bariatric surgery that provides efficient way to lose weight for a person who is overweight and the BMI of the person exceeds than 35 and more. Gastric sleeve surgery is also known with other names such as sleeve gastrectomy, tube gastrectomy, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve restriction.

In this surgery procedure about 60 to 80 percent of the stomach portion is removed and the shape of the stomach becomes like sleeve or tube. This surgery is done using laparoscopic technique in which small opening are made in the stomach through which laparoscope and other small instruments are inserted so that the portion of the stomach may be removed. And through this technique large portion of the stomach is removed and the stomach comes in the shape of tube. This surgery is performed by giving the patient general anesthesia.

Patients are expected to lose 40 to 50 percent of their body weight by undergoing this surgery procedure at first stage. In some situation duodenal switch surgery or gastric bypass surgery is required when the person achieves specified amount of weight loss. This surgery is performed after six to eight months of the gastric bypass sleeve surgery.

The people who are eligible to undergo this kind of bariatric surgery must have their BMI 35 or more. And if he is suffering from obesity related diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep anemia etc. The candidate can undergo this surgery only if he/she is unable to lose his body weight by any other weight loss technique or procedure.

After Gastric bypass surgery patient may have to stay at hospital for two days but it takes longer duration of some weeks to recover totally and live a normal life. The stomach is swollen for few days. The patients are advised to take liquid diet after the surgery. This is a effective weight loss procedure in which patients are about to lose 50 to 80 percent of their extra weight and get cure from weight related problems.
