Adjustable gastric band surgery is the restrictive weight loss surgery. This surgery is designed to have weight loss by restricting the size of stomach. This is the foremost surgery for the people who are suffering from morbid obesity. There are three devices used for this surgery. In which one of them is Swedish adjustable gastric band (SAG-BAND).

Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band was developed in Sweden in 1985 and from 1996 it was available globally. First it was introduced within Scandinavian countries. At that time laparoscopic process was not common so surgeon used to place this band via open surgery. In 1992 it was started to implant band via laparoscopically. This band is manufactured by a Sweden company, ATOS Medical.

The procedure of Swedish adjustable gastric banding is simple and less risky. A low pressure soft band is used in this surgery. SAGB (Swedish adjustable gastric band) is placed laparoscopically inside the stomach by making small 1-2 cm incisions on abdomen. Surgeon put this band like putting a belt around the stomach. It divides stomach in to two parts with the narrow passages which allow to pass food through this from upper part to lower part and thus to small intestine. Upper part is small and lower part is big. Upper part can hold only 2 to 3 ounce of food which can be increase. So you take small amount of food and feel full faster. This way in whole day you will east less and lose your overweight. It is concluded that patients can lose approx 50% of their overweight within the 18 months after surgery. But it also differs from body condition of patients to patients.

During the surgery, a port made up of titanium is attached to firm tissue structure of abdominal wall and sit under the skin permanently. Band is attached to the port via a thin catheter. It allows adding or subtracting fluid from band according to the individual requirements of weight loss. Hence this band is adjustable. When first band is placed is empty and after 3-4 weeks there is a schedule of Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band fill for SAG-Band adjustment.

A fine needle is used to insert fluid in to the port. Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band adjustment is done at surgeon’s offices or in a radiology department. Amount of fluid inserted in to band is determined by your body condition and goal of weight loss. In order to have this surgery you need to have your BMI 40 or more than this. If your BMI is 35 then you must associated with any kind of problem of morbid obesity.

From right after Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band surgery to one year, you need to follow the prescribed gastric band diet plan. Right after surgery to 2 weeks you are purely on liquid. You can drink fluid slowly in small sip. You can drink water, black coffee or tea, strained vegetables juice, protein supplement drink or other which are suggested by your surgeon. You should drink fluid slowly in small sip and keep an interval of a minute in between two sips. Gradually increase the amount of fluid you drink. Never drink more than 200ml per drink.

From weeks 3 to 5, you are now switched from liquid phase to pureed diet. Now you can introduce puree consistency food, soft food. You need to eat less and try to chew your food properly. If you will try to eat in hurry then there would be some complication related with this. Stop eating when you feel full.

After 5 weeks you can introduce solid food in your meal. Avoid grazing, fix a regular time that is meals should be three times a day.
